Volunteering in Khayelitsha

Our students recognise life is all about give and take; so in December RAGA students and staff gave up one of their Saturdays to volunteer at the Little Star Educare Centre in Mfuleni, near Khayelitsha. Through a NGO called New Kidz, the centre was given a much-needed makeover. Volunteers were divided into teams and allocated tasks, including sanding, painting, digging, laying instant lawn as well as, repairing or replacing broken windows and doors. With temperatures outside rising to 32 degrees, the RAGA team along with other New Kidz volunteers, toiled away getting hot and sticky. At the end of a tiring day a beautiful new daycare centre was born. Well done to all involved. Our students are keen to repeat this experience and are looking for a project closer to home this time. Any ideas or suggestions for ways in which our students can give back locally would be gratefully received.
